Sobre o livro
This catalogue is a collection of Photographer Fiona Harding's snapshots of one of New Zealand’s most picturesque towns rich in history and spectacular scenery. Waihi, known for it’s gold mining history with the Martha Gold mine is still in use and conducting tours. Views can be seen of the mine around the 200 meter pit. The 100 year old Cornish Pumphouse nearby overlooks the town and is the iconic symbol of Waihi.
Gold was first discovered in Waihi at Pukewa (Martha Hill) in 1878. This spawned the gold rush to the area and the town's population boomed.
Located between Waihi and Paeroa is the Karangahake Gorge which was the site of the original 1875 gold rush. You can explore the kilometre long rail tunnel or the Windows Walk, where the miners originally blasted holes in the side of the shaft walls to throw out waste rock from the mine. Today the Windows Walk boasts spectacular views of the cliff faces overlooking the Waitawheta River which has now become one of the top ‘to do’ things in New Zealand’s North Island.
On the eastern side of Waihi is Waihi Beach which stretches out for 9 kilometres of pristine coastline. Renowned for it's great swell, it is recognized as one of the most safest surf beaches in New Zealand and is known as the gateway to the Coromandel Peninsula and the Bay of Plenty.
