L'Ospedale Psichiatrico " Giuseppe Antonini " (direttore della struttura dal 1911 al 1931) nasce ufficialmente a Mombello del 1867.
Nella sua massima espansione, l'Ospedale di Mombello ebbe due picchi, il primo durante la Grande Guerra, toccando la cifra record di 3504 malati nel 1918, ed il secondo negli anni sessanta, quando contava oltre tremila pazienti.
Purtroppo, causa il numero crescente dei ricoveri, provenienti da tutta la provincia di Milano, tutti gli ampliamenti non furono mai sufficienti a garantire spazi adeguati ai pazienti.
In Italia, a seguito della legge 180 ( Basaglia ), l’opinione comune nei confronti della malattia psichiatrica è profondamente cambiata, portando al definitivo superamento degli ospedali.
A Mombello questo processo è iniziato alla fine del 1996, con l'avvio del piano di riconversione dell’ormai ex Ospedale Psichiatrico, che prevedeva la totale dismissione dei pazienti per il 2006.
L'accelerazione del processo impartita dalla legge 449, che prescriveva la dismissione degli ultimi ospedali psichiatrici entro il 31 marzo 1998, tutti i pazienti sono stati dismessi entro la fine del 1999.
Dal degrado si sono salvati Villa Crivelli, attuale sede dell' Istituto tecnico agrario, le palazzine che ospitano l' Istituto commerciale per periti aziendali e l'Ospedale " Corberi ", diventato ora una casa d' accoglienza per malati psichici gravi.
Gli altri edifici non godono invece di buona salute; le immagini di questo reportage si riferiscono ad essi, testimoni silenziosi di un passato doloroso.

The psychiatric hospital "Giuseppe Antonini" was founded in Mombello, near Milan, in 1867.
The asylum of Mombello had two peaks. The first one happened during the Great War, in 1918, with the figure of 3,504 patients, and the second in the sixties, when there were over 3,000 patients.
In due time, the hospital of Mombello became one of the biggest asylums in Italy.
Unfortunately, because of the large number of requests for hospitalization coming from the whole province of Milan, the expansion works were never sufficient to adequately host the ever-growing number of patients.
Following the provisions of the law nr. 180 (Basaglia), the Italian public opinion changed dramatically with regard to psychiatric diseases, leading to the closure of the psychiatric hospitals in Italy. At Mombello this process began in late 1996 with a plan that entailed the release of all the patients by 2006. This process was accelerated with the law nr. 449 that requested the closure of psychiatric hospitals by 31 March 1998. As a result, the end of 1999 saw the release of all the patients at Mombello.
The Mombello structures, now vacated, were left to their fate, but some of them were spared by degradation. Villa “Crivelli”, for instance, hosts to date the "Agricultural College". Other buildings provide for the "Institute for non-graduated Business" and the hospital "Corberi", is now house for patients with serious mental disorders.
