Sobre o livro
Beginning the year with a study of fractals, students started to ask questions about what the world would be like from a bird's eye view. This led us to an exploration of different bird species, where we can find them, and where they travel during their migrations. Our field photography experiences took us to three local habitats where different types of birds would be found.
Along the way we have investigated some remarkable abilities of different bird species. Students read about how birds can help predict powerful storms and why they build nests where they do. In the Farnsworth Art Museum galleries students examined Andrew and Jamie Wyeth's powerful paintings of herring gulls at sea and on a local island learning about the role of scavengers in the food chain.
We discovered how important it is to preserve vanishing habitats, both here in the north, and also along their migratory paths. As a result of our new found appreciation of an amazing branch of the Earth's family, we have begun to think about how we can help manage bird habitats and migrations in the future.
Finally, we have made kites, paper birds and flown radio operated helicopters in our investigations of flight. A fascinating day at the Owls Head Transportation Museum helped us to understand the history of human flight.
