Sobre o livro
Are we both angels and demons?
Through stunning and haunting photography celebrating the male body, Alan Lyon (an LA based, reclusive photographer with a cult following) offers his interpretation, questioning our warped, wounded sense of self in the process.
His is a story where darkest moments are embraced, where shadows and light fuse, where an ultimate message (freedom) is sanctified.
“Proud in Shadows & Lights” (the first book of several to follow) takes us through various pathways to our psyches. Along the way, our more obscure sides and better selves are explored. It allows us to discover hidden fantasies and shame, to find beauty where ugliness lies, to celebrate our more glorious, redemptive selves, to bask in the light - finally reconciled with ourselves and whole again.
Alan Lyon wants everyone to come up with their own interpretation of his work. He explains: “What I find attractive is not for everyone, but if we all embraced our sexuality, our fantasies and taboos, life can become a true celebration.”
The pictures in the book flow seamlessly, taking us on a personal journey. Shadows and light become characters whom each man interacts with. A story develops - one made of colors, motions, music, unspoken feelings and inner conflicts. Words no longer need to shape our thinking, but there is still a dialogue which takes place between the pictures and those who view them: the dialogue of the heart.

BIOGRAPHY Alan Lyon has never missed out on life – he's been too busy capturing it. Now based in LA, Alan is originally from Rochester, NY. His passion for photography developed at an early age (he got his first camera at 8; by 11 he had his own darkroom). Through his many travels and incarnations (from being a disco bartender in San Francisco at the height of everything gay to earning his MBA and becoming an accomplished businessman), his cameras have always accompanied him. Always there to capture his vision of the world, his passion for sharing stories, his striving to seize people’s essence. Alan (whose influences include Herb Ritts, Robert Mapplethorpe and Bruce of LA) has, over the years, built a cult following. He is also celebrated for his unique style of shooting. He refers to it as “energy exchange,” whereas the models don't simply “pose,” as is usually the case. They are engaged, playful, free. Rather than being one dimensional, the pictures reveal their person
