Sobre o livro
A 172 page premium paper softcover photobook.
Description:
Beijing’s greatest physical transformation in centuries began in the 1990s as China’s new market economy skyrocketed. During this period, the city recreated itself on a large scale, wiping out vast swaths of low-lying courtyard houses and intricate networks of alleys (hutong) to make way for high-rise buildings and multi-lane expressways. With the disappearance of Beijing’s traditional form of housing goes the old communal way of life they harbored. The few surviving hutong neighborhoods offer a glimpse into this fading world, where residents still go about their daily lives, even as the construction of modern Beijing rages on outside of their grey brick walls. This collection of photographs, taken in the summer of 2010, explores the tension between the city’s past and future as the city sought to remake itself into something entirely new.
