Sobre o livro
On October 17th, 2020, The Washington Post released an article alleging enduring racism at the Virginia Military Institute. This was not the first time that VMI came under fire in the media. However, this article triggered a series of events that led to a third-party investigation and the resignation of VMI’s top official. VMI, like many institutions, is defined by its public perception. Much of VMI’s campus is restricted to the public. Assumptions are made, allowing perception to become reality.
When I first came to VMI, I was mesmerized by the glamor of it all. The marketing department showed me a video about honor, discipline, and leadership. I came to believe that VMI was made of these larger-than-life leaders. I bought into their version of VMI. When I matriculated, I was surrounded by young college students. Some are leaders. Some are not. As my time at VMI progressed, I saw the stories published about a gruesome underworld at VMI. Yet, when I looked around at my fellow cadets, I still was surrounded by young college students. Some are malicious, and some are kind.
The corps is swept up by perceptions that attempt to define VMI in black in white. Between the black and white, 1700 cadets and I are lost. The cadets live in color. Each of their experiences tells their own story in the complex narrative of life.
