Street photography is about the relationship between the photographer, their camera and the environment. In the words of Alex Soth ‘I fell in love with the process of taking pictures, with wandering around finding things. To me it feels like a kind of performance. The picture is a document of that performance.’ Every time we pick up a camera, be it digital, film or phone, we engage in this performance. We encounter people, buildings, light, shadow, movement, stillness, gestures, and emotion and record those encounters in the form of an image.

Our fifth photo magazine features 42 VanSPC members, each with their unique approach to street photography. Some of the images are documentary, recording a specific time and place, the people in that space, their actions, relationships and emotions. Other photos are more abstract, disconnected from a specific time and place, evocative of a mood or atmosphere. In the end, it is the street that we use as our model, playing with colour, light, movement and expression in order to capture an image that represents our unique vision. In this sense, street photography is more than simply creating images, it is about that ever changing performance of encountering the everyday through the lens of a camera.
