Mit nur 200.000 Einwohnern ist das Northern Territory der dünnbesiedelste Teil Australiens. Dabei umfasst das Gebiet eine Größe, die etwa den Ländern Spanien, Frankreich und Italien zusammen genommen entspricht. Neben der Hauptstadt Darwin mit 120.000 Einwohnern zählen Alice Springs, Katherine, Tennant Creek und Nhulunbuy zu den größeren Städten. Im Landesinneren herrscht Wüstenklima, mit Höchsttemperaturen in den Sommermonaten von über 40° C. Die Küstenregion im Norden wird hingegen vom feucht-heißen Monsun und heftigen tropischen Wirbelstürmen (Zyklonen) bestimmt, die u.a. die Hauptstadt Darwin in den Jahren 1897, 1937 und 1974 fast vollständig zerstörten. In den Sommermonaten von November bis April liegen die Temperaturen hier bei rund 34° C. In dieser Zeit ist auch die Luftfeuchtigkeit am höchsten, und die starken Monsunregenfälle können die unbefestigten Straßen zeitweise unpassierbar machen. Diese Jahreszeit ist jedoch wegen ihres Überflusses an tropischen Blüten besonders schön.

With a population of only 200,000, the Northern Territory is the least populous of Australia’s states and territories. Its area covers a size approximately the same as Spain, France and Italy combined. In addition to the capital city Darwin with 120,000 inhabitants, Alice Springs, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Nhulunbuy are the other major towns. The central region has a desert climate with maximum temperatures climbing above 40° C in the summer months. On the other hand the coastal region in the northern end is associated with hot and humid monsoons and strong tropical cyclones that, for instance, nearly destroyed the capital city Darwin in 1897, 1937 and 1974. In the summer months from November to April the temperatures here lie at around 34° C. This is also the period of maximum humidity when strong monsoon rains sometimes make the unsealed roads impassable. However, its abundance of tropical flowers make this season extremely beautiful.
