Akaky was born in a city in the northeastern United States during the waning years of the Eisenhower Administration, along with several hundred thousand other people; it was the height of the baby boom, after all, and such things are apt to happen in the middle of a baby boom. The Beat Generation became famous at roughly the same time with the publication of Kerouac's On the Road, although I don't think the two phenomena are in any way related, and the Space Age began; it didn't start in the northeastern United States, however, so I don't think it really counts here. Kerouac was born in the northeastern United States, but not in the waning years of the Eisenhower Administration-I think Coolidge was President then, but I could be wrong about that-so I don't think he counts either. In any case, Akaky still lives there in his little corner of dystopia and is apparently making very little effort to get away from the place, which I think shows a tremendous lack of imagination on his part.
