Sobre o livro
The Black Butterfly series is my first to delve into the realm of symbolic imagery. The butterflies represent the artist's muse and my subjects are always involved in the creative arts. The butterflies may seem a trite symbol, but I had an unusual amount of butterfly sightings last summer just as I was going through a burst of creativity. I especially noticed black butterflies, unusual to my area. So I wrote a poem about the encounters as metaphoric of the artist's muse and began to incorporate butterflies into my new series of charcoal on mylar drafting film drawings.
There are several artists I've always greatly admired, and they are all the visionary artists, symbolist, magic realist sorts such as the Preraphaelites, William Blake and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Andrew Wyeth is one of my greatest mentors. I'm just beginning in this symbolist style, but I'm excited at how my thoughts take flight contemplating the next work in the series. We'll see where it takes me... ~ Alice McMahon White
