Sam Smiley is a poet, playwright, actor, theatre director, and painter. He holds BFA, MFA, and PhD degrees and has published four books, six plays, poems and essays. He taught at the Universities of Evansville, Missouri, Indiana, and Arizona. He wrote 32 plays, seven major films and TV dramas. Yale University Press published Playwriting: The Structure of Action. HONORS: College of American Theatre Fellows, 1983, Amoco Gold Medallion for Excellence in Creativity at Kennedy Center. Indiana University Grant for Creative Activity in Spain, Shell Oil Grant for research and Eli Lilly Doctoral Fellowship, Indiana Arts Commission, 1980-84.

Sam and his wife Ann live in Tucson, Arizona. He coached and wrote speeches for Ted Turner, U.S. Senators Birch Bayh and Vance Hartke, plus presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy. Since he speaks multiple languages, they visit Europe frequently often residing in Barcelona, Spain.
