The Story of Saint Cuthbert in Many Voices is a guide to and a catalog of the needlepoint kneeling cushions made for the one- hundredth anniversary in 2003 of Saint Cuthbert's chapel, Mac Mahan Island, Maine. It is also and primarily a retelling and reimagining of the life of Saint Cuthbert, based on the work of The Venerable Bede. This 8th century work suppplied all the inspiration for the narrative images.



Woven in with the text and pictures are verses that act as prayers or that illuminate the feelings or states of mind of the persons, creatures, or elements of nature who speak those rhymes.

Martha Rogers Zimiles
Millerton, New York, USA

Martha Rogers Zimiles is a third generation member of a five generation Mac Mahan Island family. Her career in the arts includes many years as a printmaker, fiber artist, designer and author. In 1976 she published A Treasury of Needlework Designs for Van Nostrand Reinhold Company. With her husband she is co-author of two books and several articles on folk art and architecture. Inspired by her investigation of the life of Saint Cuthbert and the challenge of giving it visual expression, she is currently engaged in the effort to bring her spiritual life and artistic talents together through the ancient art of icon painting.
